Giving an Old OLED a New Life

My Sony KD-55A1 OLED from 2017 still has a fantastic picture, but its Android TV interface has become slow and cluttered with applications and features I rarely use. Rather than replace a perfectly good television, I decided to improve the software experience myself.

Savage TV is an ongoing project for a cleaner, faster and more personal interface. Using the open-source CleanYourTV project as a starting point, I’m experimenting with a lightweight launcher and removing unnecessary clutter.

A simpler television interface

The design uses a dark blue-to-amber background and large buttons for YouTube, Prime Video, Kodi, Netflix, NRK, TV 2 Play, Altibox and HBO Max. The aim is a responsive home screen that shows the applications I use, without unnecessary distractions.

Working integrations

Savage TV works and is used daily. SavageHome and Pulpwave are already partially integrated and working. Further work continues on the television interface and how the projects connect.

Savage TV has no separate phone app. SavageHome can upload, crop and preview an image, apply it as the TV background and restore the previous background. Pulpwave brings narrated stories, character voices, sound effects and atmosphere to the living-room sound system.
