A printed strip number identifies an episode, but not always a unique drawing or newspaper version. This guide keeps those distinctions visible.
Numbers and letter suffixes
Letters form part of the printed strip number. 2353 and 2353A are distinct labels. A story range ending in A does not prove that an A version exists for every number in that range.
The archive records The Killing Ground as A1–A36. Its prefix distinguishes it from the ordinary daily sequence. In the Beginning uses 1–12 in a separate special, so a number alone can refer to more than one story.
Regional and redrawn strips
Steve Holland’s account of The Lady Killers describes additional Glasgow bank-holiday strips reproduced in the book’s introduction, including a Holdaway strip later redrawn by Romero. Regional publication can therefore produce material absent from a London run.
Individual alternate drawings will be registered only when the printed number and the relevant images or edition evidence can be checked together.
What counts as a variant?
A different photograph, scan, sale listing or owner does not by itself make a new strip variant. A crop or a rearranged reprint should be described as such. Genuine alternate artwork needs its own evidence and label.
Edition evidence: Brethren of Blaise
The Grand Comics Database index for Comics Revue Presents Modesty Blaise #20 records a single-strip English ending to Brethren of Blaise, with a note by Lawrence Blackmore. This is an edition-level research lead; the gallery does not yet present a verified comparison of the endings.
