Modesty’s closest friend and partner

Documented in: Prose · Newspaper strips

Willie stands beside Modesty through the newspaper stories and prose fiction. He calls her his princess; their bond is friendship rather than a conventional romantic pairing.

His practical ingenuity, fighting skills and trust in Modesty make him an active partner in their escapes. The stories allow each to act independently while relying on the other’s judgement.

Their attachment coexists with other friendships and lovers. O’Donnell consistently resisted turning the partnership into a conventional romance.

Willie’s practical ingenuity is matched by a taste for obscure words, card tricks and reading. His familiar “Princess” is a term of affection for Modesty, within a partnership built on trust rather than romance.
